Remove wheel and tire assembly. Remove the brake caliper from the brake rotor. Remove both brake pads from the caliper. If repairs are to be done off the car, hold caliper in vise. Inspect piston to determine which face of tool will provide best engagement. Engage tips of tool in holes or slots in piston.
Turn piston while exerting inward pressure on piston. Note the movement of piston to be sure that it is retracting into the caliper. Some pistons are actuated by left-hand threads. Continue to turn piston until it bottoms out.
Place pads in caliper and check for 1/16 inch maximum clearance from rotor. A clearance greater than 1/16 inch may allow the adjuster to be pulled out of the piston when the service brake is applied. If the brake pad clearance exceeds 1/16 inch, engage and rotate the piston out to reduce clearance.
